Pit Fire is one of the oldest ways to fire ceramics. It is a very labor intensive process. Actually making the piece requires hours of burnishing, as there is no glaze used to create the shine and color. Then the work is loaded into a big pit, wood stacked on top and the fire lit. You have little control of what happens next. After the pit cools and the ashes are rubbed off, you can see where the majic has happened!
